1928 Beacon Hill is an upscale restaurant in Boston, Massachusetts serving New England American cuisine in an antique-filled atmosphere. Their current brand does not feel as considered and intentional as the interior of their space and they need an updated identity that reflects their evolution and that is unified across the entire brand experience.
My involvement with the project ended before the project was completed, but below are the directions I created based on the brief and art directions.
Direction 1
I wanted to bring in elements that would help create a classic feeling at the core, punctuated with charming characteristics that allude to 1928 Beacon Hill as an upscale institution with a sly sense of humor.
The typography chosen for this direction is a mix of script with serif for the numerals. I used the client’s color preference of orange and green as a jumping off point to create a palette that felt old school but also stylish. Throughout the restaurant are vintage trinkets, such as fox figurines, original to the space. The client felt strongly about integrating this somehow into the branding and I used this opportunity to create illustrations that can be used sensibly throughout.
Direction 2
Taking some subtle cues from elongated art deco inspired forms, this direction is less whimsical but balances the contemporary with the classic.
The typography chosen plays with a mix of engraver’s style sans, calligraphic numerals and vertically-upright forms. The color palette is a nod to the sturdy institution with some unconventional pops of color. Another motif the client was interested in exploring are potted palms which are a prevalent feature in the restaurant. These illustrations are included to provide additional charm and warmth to the brand.
